the surrounding area

Kilmun is situated in a spectacular area of the country, overlooking Loch Awe.

The area is well known for its stunning natural beauty, and there are many recommended walks.

N.B. The white building to the left of the house is a disused barn, not another house.

the great outdoors

There are several straightforward mountain-bike trails through the woods (bikes can be hired locally), while fishing and boating can be arranged. A ruined castle on a small island in the Loch (complete with dungeon) can be explored by hiring a boat from the village.

The remaining part of the old Caledonian Oak Forest is now a nature reserve, and there is evidence of charcoal-burners of the 18th and 19th centuries and - further back still - of ancient burial grounds. Two woodland walks close by are featured in Scotland The Best.

For particularly keen walkers there are several Munros within an hour's drive.

Boat trips to Mull, Iona and Staffa leave from Oban, which is forty minutes'drive from the house.

shopping

Oban is the nearest larger centre for shopping , but most visitors will probably choose to stock up before arriving and enjoy peace and quiet and time to themselves in and around Kilmun itself.

There is a village shop and very good cafe (excellent cappuccino & cakes) in Dalavich about 1 mile away. Other small shops are at Taynuilt, reached by a spectacular, twisting single-track road.

food and drink

The nearest pub is 7 miles away at Kilchrenan, where there are also two excellent lochside hotels (Taychreggan Hotel and Ardanaseig Hotel) welcoming non-residents to their dining-room. Both hotels are featured in A Taste of Scotland.
